Vulnerable women, mainly from eastern Europe, are being trafficked into England and Wales and forced to have sex with clients in rental homes and hotels, according to an inquiry into so-called pop-up brothels by a cross-party group of politicians. Organized crime groups advertise their victims to buyers on sex marketplace websites and host them in temporary brothels - often homes rented for short periods of time - the report said. Short-term home rental giant Airbnb said this year it would invest in new technology to tackle modern slavery amid concerns that traffickers are using its properties as pop-up brothels to sexually abuse women and girls in Britain and the United Sates. Britain is regarded as a leader in global efforts to combat slavery, and passed the law in to introduce life sentences for traffickers, force companies to check their supply chains for forced labor, and protect people at risk of being enslaved.
Europe Must Target Demand To Fight Sex Trafficking – Hannah Bondi
Every year more than 6, children aged between 12 and 16 are smuggled into western Europe to work as prostitutes and drug traffickers or to beg, the children's charity Terre des Hommes said. Researchers have identified north-eastern Italy as a key sorting centre for girls from eastern Europe who are either sold by their parents, kidnapped by organised crime gangs, or lured abroad by the mirage of a better life. Last year girls managed to escape from their exploiters and seek assistance from the Italian state. Those falling victim to people-traffickers are becoming younger, and the crime gangs are adopting increasingly sophisticated techniques to prevent them from coming to the attention of the police, said Barbara Limanowska, the author of a Unicef report on the trafficking of women and children in south-eastern Europe.
Sex trafficking is big business. This sexual slavery is happening on our doorsteps, with Western European countries among the primary countries of demand. In , the IMO found that , women and children were being trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation every year in Europe. This is because commercial sexual exploitation is demand-driven. Put simply, there is a sexual demand for women and girls from male sex buyers who want to pay as little as possible.
People choose their destination for different reasons; some are motivated by cheap travel and low costs of entertainment whilst some opt to visit countries that offer more than just a cheap night out. In this feature, we look at why Eastern Europe has become a popular destination for sex tourists plus where in the region are the hottest spots for a wild weekend away. Traditionally, the most popular places to head for adult entertainment have been in parts of Asia such as the Philippines, Thailand and Cambodia. Over the last few decades, however, Eastern Europe has been growing in prominence as a location for sex tourism and exotic hook ups. Not only does the region offer some of the most beautiful cities and cultural landmarks but several countries not only have legalised prostitution but also regulated and licensed sex industries.
